Why Can't I Send Emails Through Port 25 or 465 on Shellfire VPN?

Last updated: February 20, 2025

Why are ports 25 and 465 blocked?

To prevent spam abuse, we have implemented restrictions on outbound email traffic through ports 25 and 465. These ports are frequently used for sending spam, and allowing unrestricted access has led to significant abuse from our IP addresses.

What should I do instead?

Instead of using ports 25 or 465, please configure your email client to send emails via port 587 with STARTTLS. This is the modern, recommended way to send emails securely.

Do I need to change anything for incoming emails?

No, your incoming email settings remain unchanged. You only need to update the outgoing mail server settings to use port 587 with STARTTLS.

Why is port 587 with STARTTLS recommended?

  • Security: STARTTLS encrypts your connection, ensuring that your emails are transmitted securely.
  • Best Practices: Many mail providers and security policies now enforce the use of port 587 for sending emails.
  • Spam Prevention: Blocking ports 25 and 465 helps reduce spam and ensures that our VPN does not get blocked by e-mail providers.

What if the issues persist?

If you encounter any problems after making these changes, please double-check your email client settings. Ensure that:

  • You are using port 587 for sending mail.
  • STARTTLS is enabled.
  • Your username and password are correctly configured.

If issues persist, consult your email provider's support documentation or customer support for specific instructions on configuring your email client. Most major providers offer detailed setup guides.

How do I update my email settings in my client?

Popular email clients like Outlook, Thunderbird, and Apple Mail allow you to modify SMTP settings easily. Refer to your provider's instructions for the exact steps, but in general, you can update your settings under the account settings or server settings section of your email client.
